Data charter

Farmers own their farm data

Every drone flight, robot run, spray job, storage reading and sale creates data. Over years that becomes a rare and valuable dataset about food production in Africa. This charter is the set of rules that decides what Ifenri is allowed to do with it.

Draft pending legal review. This charter follows Nigerian data protection law as we currently understand it, but it has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer and it will be reviewed yearly with farmers and partners. It is a statement of practice, not a legal instrument.

01Who owns the data

Farmers own their farm data. Ifenri may use it for the purposes the farmer agreed to, and shares the benefit where that data creates value.

Ownership is not a slogan here — it has practical consequences. A farmer can ask what we hold about their farm, ask us to correct it, and ask us to stop using it. Where a partner pays for insight derived from farm data, the farmer shares in that value.

03What we use it for

Only for agreed purposes. In practice those are the purposes that make the service work, plus the specific additional uses a farmer has opted into:

  • Delivering the service itself — planning a flight, dispatching a machine, producing your report.
  • Improving our own crop, storage and quality models, using field-validated data.
  • Producing aggregated, anonymised insight for partners such as insurers, lenders, processors and health or nutrition programmes, where you have opted in.
  • Meeting legal and safety obligations, including incident records and regulatory reporting.

04Sharing and anonymisation

We anonymise and aggregate before any sharing with partners. We never sell personal data.

Where data supports insurance, credit, nutrition or food-safety partnerships, partners receive aggregated or anonymised insight — not identifiable farm records. A named partner and a written purpose are required before any such product launches.

05Security and breach handling

Secure storage, access control, audit logs and a breach plan. Access to identifiable farm data is limited to the people who need it to deliver the service, and that access is logged.

If data is ever lost or exposed, affected farmers will be told directly and promptly, along with what we are doing about it.

06The rules in full

  • Informed consent, in plain language. Farmers give consent in plain language and local languages, and consent can be withdrawn.
  • Farmers own their farm data. Ifenri may use it for agreed purposes, and shares the benefit where the data creates value.
  • Anonymise before sharing. Anonymise and aggregate before any sharing with partners. Never sell personal data.
  • Secure by default. Secure storage, access control, audit logs and a breach plan.
  • Publish and review. A short data charter, reviewed yearly with farmers and partners.
  • Follow the law. Nigerian data protection law, and any rules for health-related data, confirmed with a lawyer.

07Health-related data

Ifenri is not a medical-device or clinical company. Health value arrives as insight, early warning and partnerships built on food data — never as clinical data about individuals.

Any use of health-related data will follow the additional rules that apply to it in Nigeria, confirmed with a lawyer before that work begins.

08Review and contact

This charter is published and reviewed yearly with farmers and partners. If it changes in a way that affects what we do with data we already hold, we will say so and ask again.
